KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Pakistan defeated India in their first Super Four game of Asia Cup 2022.
  • India next face Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage.
  • Virender Sehwag hopes that Dinesh Karthik makes a comeback for the game
After losing their opening Super Four game against Pakistan in a closely fought encounter that went into the last over, the Men in Blue will now take on Sri Lanka in the next game of the Super Four on Tuesday (September 6). India have to win the match to ensure their hopes of a place in the final alive.
One of India's best players in recent times has been Dinesh Karthik. After successfully performing the role of a finisher with success in IPL 2022, Karthik has made a comeback into the national team and has performed the role of the finisher with aplomb in the successive T20 series that followed. He even was chosen ahead of Rishabh Pant in the opening game of the Asia Cup against Pakistan.
However, in the Super Four game against the Men in Green, Karthik was rested in favour of Rishabh Pant once again. Former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag has reckoned that Karthik should come back into the side for the Sri Lanka game, and should be in the team in the T20 World Cup as well.
"I think there will be one change, they might bring in a finisher. If you have brought in Dinesh Karthik at the age of 37 and given him the job of a finisher, then he should play till the World Cup," Sehwag said in an interaction with Cricbuzz.
Sehwag also feels that the team can also look at Ishan Kishan if they want a left hand-right hand combination. "Now if the team wants to see a left-right combination or something else, then they have to explore some other options. Ishan Kishan is there on the sidelines, bring him in if required," he added.
Virender Sehwag also added that he would want to see a settled batting line up for the T20 World Cup getting a solid run.
"If they have a playing XI in mind for the World Cup, then I wish to see that. There are a couple of bowlers who are out injured, but the batting is intact. I wish to see who the top six batters are. Identify them and give them a solid run till the World Cup," the former opener added.
