Kolkata: On Sunday night, a turboprop plane was coming in to land at Kolkata Airport when a kite struck into the windshield. The pilots informed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials of the occurrence that briefly made them unnerved after landing.
The pilots of SpiceJet flight SG-077 reportedly noticed kites being flown around the BT College ground in New Barrackpore as they were swiftly descending to land.
A kite hit the windshield while the captain was alerting the air traffic control. It is banned to fly kites inside or close to an airport, especially in the area where planes take off and land.
Kites, which have been dangerous for two-wheeler drivers on flyovers, are now a danger to aircraft in the skies as well. Any diversion while a plane is in the last stages of landing can result in a serious accident. The incident has been reported to the police by AAI.
The pilots complained in writing to the airport operational control centre and noted the kite incident in their logbooks. According to the Times of India, AAI sent the complaint to the NSC Bose Airport PS.
Bird strikes, the flying of Chinese lanterns during Kali Puja and Diwali, and the usage of strong strobe lights during events and celebrations have all been issues in the past.
Pilots had to complain about the use of lanterns and lights Last Durga Puja in Lake Town due to the problems it can cause to flights and pilots. However, Kites have made such an incident for the first time.
