Udaipur: A man was allegedly beheaded by two men in the Maldas street area in Udaipur of Rajasthan in broad daylight on Tuesday. The victim owned a tailoring shop in the Dhanmondi area near Bhootmahal in the city.
The family of the victim alleged that he had shared a post in support of the suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma a few days ago. It is being speculated that the killing was in retaliation to the victim's post in support of Nupur Sharma.
The killers made a video of the brutal murder and shared it on social media. The said video went viral over the internet. The killers were seen making derogatory remarks and even threatened PM Modi in the video.
Here are the so far developments in the Udaipur communal incident:
  • At around 2.30 pm, two youths-- Mohammed Riyaz Akhtar and Mohammed Gos arrived at the tailoring shop of the victim identified as Kanhaiya Lal on a bike. While Kanhaiya Lal was taking the measurements, Riyaz brutally hit on his head and neck with swords while the other recorded the crime on his mobile phone, police said.
  • The killers, Mohammed Riyaz Akhtar and Mohammed Gosh later confessed to the killing in a video with no remorse while brandishing the murder weapon.
  • Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot condemned the incident and urged people to not share the said video on social media further. "I condemn the heinous murder of a youth in Udaipur. Strict action will be taken against all the criminals involved in this incident and the police will go to the bottom of the crime. I appeal to all parties to maintain peace. Strictest punishment will be given to every person involved in such heinous crime," Ashok Gehlot wrote in a series of tweets. "I appeal to everyone not to try to spoil the atmosphere by sharing the video of this incident. By sharing the video, the criminal's purpose of spreading hatred in the society will be successful," the CM added.
  • Internet services have been temporarily suspended for the next 24 hours in the Udaipur district in view of the tensions amid the killing.
  • Local protested by burning tyres after two men behead youth in broad daylight in Udaipur's Maldas street area. Shops in Maldas street were also closed following the incident.
  • ADG Law and Order Hawa Singh Ghumeria noted that a high alert was issued in the state. More police force was deployed in the city. All the SPs and IGs have been directed to increase the mobility of forces and to maintain officers on the ground. Two ADGPs from Jaipur, one more SP, and 600 additional police forces have been sent to Udaipur, as per TOI report.
  • A curfew and Section 144 have been imposed in Dhanmondi, Ghantaghar, Hathipol, Ambamata, Surajpol, Bhupalpura, and Savina areas of the city for an indistinct period of time until further orders.
  • The two accused involved in the case have been arrested, Rajasthan CM noted in a tweet. "Both the accused of the murder of a man in Udaipur arrested from Rajsamand. The investigation, in this case, will be done under the Case Officer Scheme and by ensuring a speedy investigation the criminals will be punished severely in the court," Ashok Gehlot tweeted.
  • Both the accusedhave been detained. The law and order situation is under control. Some peoplewere attempting to come out of the bylanes but were controlled. Curfew imposedin the nearby areas: Udaipur SP Manoj Kumar.
