As Pakistan continued to harbour its obsession to take over the Kashmir valley, it saw an opportunity following India’s military defeat after the Chinese invasion of 1962, as the Indian army was reorganizing itself. Goaded on by a US think-tank study that suggested that Pakistan could capture Kashmir with better-implemented plans, Pakistan’s leader Gen. Ayub Khan, egged on by his young and ambitious foreign minister Zulfikar Bhutto, decided on a 2 part operation against India. When India’s military commanders alerted the political leadership, they allowed India’s armed forces to stall Pakistan’s plans to launch a full-fledged military assault- operation Grand Slam- across Jammu and Punjab to break Kashmir away from India’s mainland.
