Flossie, a playful British feline, has officially been crowned the world’s oldest living cat just before her 27th birthday, according to a news release.
The brown and black cat received official recognition from Guinness World Records on Thursday at an incredible age of 26 years and 329 days.
"I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I didn’t imagine I’d share my home with a world record holder," said owner Vicki Green, who adopted the elderly feline in August after she was taken in by UK cat welfare charity Cats Protection.
"She's so affectionate and playful, especially sweet when you remember how old she is. I'm immensely proud that Cats Protection matched me with such an amazing cat," Green added.
Born in 1995, Flossie has lived in several homes since her first few months as a stray kitten near Merseyside hospital in Liverpool, northwestern England, CNN reported.
She was adopted by a worker at the hospital and lived with them for around 10 years before her owner died. Flossie was then taken in by her late owner’s sister, whom she lived with for another 14 years until her demise. Later, the cat was with her second owner’s son for about three years before finally being handed to the volunteers at Cats Protection.
That’s when her bid for a Guinness World Record title began.
"We were flabbergasted when we saw that Flossie's vet records showed her to be 27 years old," said Cats Protection's branch coordinator Naomi Rosling of the remarkable discovery.
But even at her grand old age, the 26-year-old cat is playful as a kitty and loves to cuddle.
Although poorly sighted and deaf, Flossie is in good health.

Not the oldest cat ever, not by a long shot

She isn’t the oldest cat to ever live, yet. That distinction is reserved for Creme Puff, who has far outlived the oldest cats on the face of Earth in all of documented history.
The record breaker surpasses Flossie by over a decade.
Born in Texas, USA on August 3, 1967, Puff lived to be 38 years and 3 days until August 6, 2005.
