New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who will be contesting the Congress president election 2022 against his party colleague Digvijaya Singh, on Thursday said that it will "not be a battle between rivals but a friendly contest" among colleagues.
Singh is expected to file his nomination papers on Friday.
Digvijaya Singh met Shashi Tharoor today after collecting nomination papers for the polls.
"Received a visit from Digvijaya Singh this afternoon. I welcome his candidacy for the Presidency of our Party," Tharoor said in a tweet.
"We both agreed that ours is not a battle between rivals but a friendly contest among colleagues. All we both want is that whoever prevails, @incIndia will win!" he said.
Replying to Tharoor's tweet, Singh tweeted, "I agree @ShashiTharoor we are fighting the Communal Forces in India. Both believe in the Gandhian Nehruvian Ideology and shall fight them relentlessly come what may. Best wishes."
More than 10 Congress MLAS from Madhya Pradesh will reach Delhi to be the proposers for Singh when he files his nomination for the Congress president's election.
Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, has announced that he will file his nomination for the post of Congress president on Friday.
The polling for the Congress president post will take place on October 17 while the result will be announced on October 19.
In a significant development, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today met Sonia Gandhi and apologised and took moral responsibility for the political crisis in his state.
Gehlot announced that he will not contest the Congress presidential polls.
"I have always been a disciplined soldier of Congress," the Rajasthan CM said, adding that he felt sorry and have apologised to Sonia Gandhi for developments in Rajasthan.
