Hindus follow the traditional Lunar calendar to determine important days and festival dates. Interestingly, devotees from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan follow the Purnimant calendar (a new month start after the Full Moon Day). In contrast, those in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka etc., follow the Amavasyant calendar (a new month starts after the New Moon Day). And interestingly, since the two calendars are fortnight apart, there is a gap of fifteen days between the start date of the months. Therefore, a few festivals are observed on different dates in these states.
For example, the holy month of Shravan. As per the Purnimant calendar, Shravan usually concurs with Gregorian July, while the same month falls in August as per the Amavasyant calendar. Hence, scroll down to know more about the holy month of Shravan and the start and end dates in 2022.

Shravan is hailed as one of the holiest because it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort, Devi Parvati. Moreover, it marks the beginning of Chaturmas (consisting of four months - Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Kartika), a period deemed ideal for performing penance and austerities. However, this period is unfavourable for organising celebrations and functions such as engagements, marriages, child's naming or head tonsuring ceremonies and grihapravesh (housewarming ceremony).
Nonetheless, fasting, celibacy, spiritual practice, meditation and penances are encouraged during the Chaturmas. Hence, devotees observe the Shravan Somar Vrat and the Mangala Gauri Vrat on Mondays and Tuesdays.
