Neeraj Chopra rewrites history! Indian Olympic champion shatters national record at Stockholm Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra on Thursday scripted history by breaking the national record at Stockholm Diamond League with a throw of 89.94 metres. Chopra broke his previous record of 89.30 metres which was set earlier this month during the Paavo Nurmi Games. Chopra ended his Diamond League campaign at the second spot.

Stockholm: India's ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Thursday scripted history by breaking the national record at Stockholm Diamond League. The 24-year-old Olympic gold medalist recorded 89.94 metres in his first attempt. Chopra broke his previous record of 89.30 metres which was set earlier this month during the Paavo Nurmi Games.
The 24-year-old ended his Diamond League campaign at the second spot. Chopra broke the national record with his first throw at the vent. However, he failed to breach the 90-metre mark. Chopra threw 84.37 metres in the second attempt. The Olympic gold medalist recorded 87.46 metres, 84.77 metres, 86.67 metres and 86.84 metres in his third, fourth, fifth and sixth attempts respectively.
Grenada's Anderson Peters clinched the first position with a throw of 90.31 metres in his third attempt. Before this, Peters had thrown 90m-plus twice this season. During the Doha leg of the Diamond League last month, the Grenadian javelin thrower recorded 93.07 metres and 90.75 metre-effort at Hengelo in the Netherlands.
Julian Weber of Germany finished third with a fifth-round throw of 89.08 metres. Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic managed to secure the fourth position with a throw of 88.59 metres. Another Czech athlete and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Vitezslav Vesely finished seventh.
Notably, Chopra has defeated peters twice this year. In Turku. Chopra finished second, while the athlete from Grenada was third. In the Kuortane Games, also in Finland, the Indian superstar had won gold with a best throw of 86.69m under wet and slippery conditions.
The 24-year-old Indian ace javelin thrower made his first Diamond League appearance in four years. In Zurich in August 2018, Chopra had finished fourth. Before this, he has taken part in seven Diamond League campaigns -- three in 2017 and four in 2018. The next Diamond League is in Monaco on August 10.
