New Delhi: Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has declared he was buying football club Manchester United.
Musk tweeted on Tuesday night: "Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome."
In a series of tweets, the world’s wealthiest man with a $267 billion net worth, asserted that he backed both the right and left halves of the Democratic and Republican parties.
Musk, 51, is a habitual tweeter, and he creates controversies with irreverent tweets. However, it was not immediately clear whether the tycoon was serious to pursue a deal.
The American Glazer family owns Manchester United, who also run the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Premier League club had a market capitalization of about $2.08 billion, as of Tuesday's stock market close.
United's, who have won a record 13 Premier League titles, woeful start to the Premier League season continues after a disastrous start to the season under new coach Erik ten Hag, losing their two opening games—including a 4-0 defeat to Brentford on the weekend.
Netizens were left in a shock at Musk's tweet. A United supporter wrote on the micro-blogging platform: 'You have absolutely no idea the sheer amount of hope you just have to a million fans worldwide. Please do buy us though.'
Recently, fans of Manchester United protested against the Glazers, as they were angry at the club’s massive fall in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Meanwhile, a court on Monday ruled that Twitter has to provide Musk documents from a former Twitter executive who the Tesla chief said was a crucial figure in calculating the number of fake accounts on the social media platform.
Twitter has sued Musk over his bid to terminate the $44 billion deal.
It is important to mention in this context that Musk's latest tweets are likely to draw regulatory attention, as Manchester United stocks are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
