Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department office at Bhubaneswar has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several Odisha districts till Wednesday evening. The heavy rainfall alert has been issued owing to a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
HR Biswas of IMD, Bhubaneswar said most places in the state of Odisha are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall over the next 24 hours. However, districts like Puri, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Koraput and Cuttack may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The intensity of the rain is likely to reduce after Wednesday evening.
“There is a low-pressure area in west-central Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh coast. Most places are likely to receive light to moderate rain. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Puri, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Koraput, Cuttack and other districts. Rainfall to slightly reduce after 24 hours,” said Biswas.
The IMD earlier stated that the low-pressure area formed under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal.
The weather department stated that the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 kilometres above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards.
"It is very likely to move west-northwestwards to Andhra Pradesh coast during the next two days,” an IMD release stated.
It was earlier reported that most places in Odisha would witness light to moderate rain/thundershower till 8.30 am on Wednesday (October 5).
A yellow warning was also issued for heavy rainfall at isolated places over the coastal and southern districts of the state.
Many places in Odisha already experienced significant rainfall over the last 24 hours. Jamsolaghat in Mayurbhanj recorded seven centimetres of rainfall while Bhanjnagar in Ganjam received six centimetres of precipitation.
