Dhanbad: A businessman from Dhanbad's Jharkhand was killed on the spot after two unidentified assailants opened fire from a close range on Thursday evening.
The victim was identified as 35-year-old Jyoti Ranjan Sharma, who owned a food processing unit in Barwadda. The deceased was also involved in real estate deals, reports said.
The murder took place when the victim was travelling with his family, the Times of India (TOI) said in report. According to the statement given by his wife Deepa to the Rajgunj police, Jyoti Ranjan Sharma had gone out for shopping with his wife and eight-year-old son on Thursday.
When they returned, the main gate of the housing complex they were staying at was closed. Sharma asked his wife to open the gate after stopping the car nearby, the news report said. While she was opening the gate, two men approached the car and fired twice at Sharma from a close range. Deepa added that her husband was hit on his head and neck, TOI said.
The men also fired at the woman but missed. The injured Sharma was taken to the Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College in Dhanbad where he was brought dead by the doctors.
According to the news report, the Rajgunj police on Friday recovered the magazine of a country-made pistol from a field adjoining the deceased man's apartment. The catridges of an automatic pistol were found inside the victim's car as well.
Last month, a robber was shot dead in cross-firing with Jharkhand police at a finance firm in Dhanbad. Two others were captured alive by the force at the Muthoot Fin Corp's gold loan branch on Matkuria road after the robbery attempt by a five-member group was foiled.
