After Anil Kumble, if any wrist-spinner has played consistently, it's Yuzvendra Chahal: Sanjay Bangar

Sanjay Bangar has heaped huge praise on Yuzvendra Chahal. As per Bangar, Chahal has been the only wrist-spinner in the Indian cricket team that has performed consistently since Anil Kumble.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Anil Kumble is unarguably India's most successful wrist-spinner.
  • As per Sanjay Bangar, no wrist-spinner in India has been as consistent as Yuzvendra Chahal since Anil Kumble's retirement.
  • Bangar sees Chahal as a strong candidate for selection in the Indian team for T20 World Cup 2022.
Team India hasn't had many superstar leg-spinners. Since Anil Kumble's retirement, not many have been able to cement their place in the team as wrist-spinners. But, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar feels Yuzvendra Chahal is someone who has been quite consistent as a wrist-spinner since his arrival.
Chahal's career graph has been topsy-turvy over the last year or so. The wrist-spinner didn't enjoy the best of form going into the T20 World Cup 2021 and was snubbed for a spot in the squad for the showpiece event. With the T20 World Cup 2022 beckoning, Bangar sees Chahal as a must-pick, all because of the consistency with which he has bowled.
"Yuzvendra Chahal is a player who was missed a lot in the last World Cup. He will definitely emerge as a trump card in Australia and give the Indian team good success," said Bangar on Star Sports.
"If any leg-spinner has played consistently for a long time for India, that is Anil Kumble. After Anil Kumble, if any wrist-spinner has played consistently for India or a long time, it is Yuzvendra Chahal."
Bangar feels playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium, which is one of the smaller grounds in India, Chahal has been able to develop himself further.
"Absolutely, it has played a huge role. It is tested how big a heart you have. When you learn to get hit and are not afraid of getting hit, then you learn how to bowl.
"He changes his seam position slightly, bowls different-different lines, this has been his strength. He has brought a very good aspect in his game, that is to bowl on wider lines to both right-handers and left-handers. That learning that he has got has come from Chinnaswamy only," he explained.
Chahal has marked his return to India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad after an impressive Indian Premier League campaign for Rajasthan Royals. He would be keen to keep up that form and not miss the bus to T20 World Cup this year.
