Pakistan: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused former PM Imran Khan of 'creating unrest in the nation, and chaos in the state institutions' over his 'leaked audio' controversy. Sharif further slammed Khan's repeated claims of a US conspiracy being the reason behind his ouster from power.
"A thief who has been caught red-handed is maligning state institutions just to escape punishment. After creating unrest in the nation, the conspirator (Imran Khan) is trying to create chaos in the state institutions," current Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif said, as quoted by local daily The Dawn's news website.
Notably, a leaked audio tape allegedly of PTI chief Imran Khan surfaced last week where he could be heard talking about a cypher sent by the Pakistan ambassador in Washington about his meeting with a US official. The former Pakistan PM's conversation with his then principal secretary Azam Khan purportedly revolved around the attempts to bend the narrative of his ouster from power as a US conspiracy.
In the audio, the PTI chief could be purportedly heard telling his aide Azam Khan to 'play with the United States' conspiracy' that allegedly aimed to topple his government earlier this year. "Ok, so now let's just play with it. We don't need to name America. We will just play over it and say that the date was already there," he said.
Azam Khan responded to the same by suggesting a meeting and said, "Sir, I was thinking…that we should hold a meeting on this cypher issue. If you might remember, the ambassador mentioned at the last of the letter that we should issue a demarche."
The Pakistan government has ordered a probe into the leaked audio clips. "Being a popular leader does not mean being exempt from the law; the law is equal for all," Shehbaz Sharif added as Imran Khan, as per The Dawn.
