New Delhi: Days, after a controversy broke out over controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad by two BJP leaders, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday, said that “sensibilities and the sensitivities of people were impacted”.
He further said that though few nations expressed concerns over the views expressed by Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal, they appreciated the fact that this was not the position of the Indian government.
He also asserted that what was said was not the stand of the BJP and the party had made it very clear by taking action against Sharma and Jindal.
“There will be people who will fish in troubled waters. International relations is a very competitive game which is not played by Queensberry rules. There will be people who will try to get the most out of it,” TOI quoted the EAM as saying.
When asked about why countries should lecture India Jaishankar said he is also a little sensitive to being lectured.
Several Muslim-majority nations had expressed outrage over the controversial remarks on the Prophet Muhammad.
Protests had also erupted in various states including Punjab, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh over the controversial remarks.
On Friday, Maharashtra Congress leader Naseem Khan sought immediate arrest of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal for their alleged objectionable remark against Prophet Muhammad.
Khan has written letters to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister and Congress Legislative Party leader Balasaheb Thorat, Public Works Minister Ashok Chavan and Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil.
A Mumbai police team is already in Delhi in connection with the probe against Sharma for alleged objectionable comments.
The team, from the Pydhonie police station, is in the national capital for the past five days as it needs to physically hand over summons to Sharma to appear before the police and to look into other aspects of the probe.
