KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Steve Smith scored his 12th ODI century
  • A clip of Smith telling the umpire about a no-ball has gone viral
  • Smith scored a knock of 105 runs in the 3rd ODI vs New Zealand
Star Australian batter Steve Smith was at his fluent best in the ongoing third ODI between Australia and New Zealand at the Cazaly Cricket Stadium in Cairns. The 33-year-old scored his 12th ODI century with a sublime knock of 105 in 131 balls on a tricky pitch.
Smith registered his first ton in the 50-over format in 18 months having last reached the milestone in an ODI against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground in November, 2020. Smith's exceptional effort helped Australia recover from a rocky start that saw them reduced to 16-2 and ultimately put a big total of 267 on the board. Marnus Labuschagne gave Smith solid support with a half-century and put a 118-run partnership with him for the third wicket which gave the hosts a solid platform.
While Smith's innings was the hallmark of the match, it was a sensational six from him on Jimmy Neesham's bowling that caught the eyes of the world. In the 38th over of the innings, he slogged the right-arm medium pacer for a six over long-on. While the shot was very adventurous from Smith, his actions after the shot revealed the reason behind his confidence in taking the risk.
As soon as the ball crossed the boundary line, Smith was quick to point to the umpire that it was a no-ball and he should count the number of fielders outside the ring. The ex-Australian skipper's observation turned out to be completely right as there was one less fielder inside the circle than required by the regulations earning Smith a lot of praise for his game awareness.
