CM Stalin inaugurates Independence Day Park in Chennai on banks of Buckingham Canal

In honour of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Monday originally inaugurated the "Suthanthira Thirunaal Amudha Peruvizha Poonga," or Independence Day Park, on the banks of the Buckingham Canal between Kasturba and Thiruvanmiyur MRTS railway stations.

Chennai: In honour of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Monday originally inaugurated the "Suthanthira Thirunaal Amudha Peruvizha Poonga," or Independence Day Park, on the banks of the Buckingham Canal between Kasturba and Thiruvanmiyur MRTS railway stations.
The 2.1 kilometre park, which the Tamil Nadu government constructed for Rs 18.71 crore, comprises a Miyawaki forest, a kids' play area, and a dedicated bicycle lane, among other attractions. According to a government announcement, the extra amenities include an open gym, a badminton court, LED lights, wall art, and a fake fountain. The park also features a separate area where kids can practise the martial art from Silambattam, as well as an outdoor theatre for cultural events.
Several prominent officials, including MP Tamizhachi Thangapandian, Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy, Chennai Mayor R Priya, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, and others, attended the ceremony.
Chief Minister Stalin claimed on Twitter that the park is another addition to the Singara Chennai 2.0 plan.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government's pet project, Singara Chennai 2.0, aims to beautify the city with a focus on a clean and green Chennai. As part of its Singara Chennai 2.0 programme, the state government passed a government order in January to establish 23 parks at a cost of Rs 18.48 crore and upgrade five others at a cost of Rs 5.95 crore.
