The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday (September 30) confirmed that Mohammed Siraj will be a replacement for injured fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian team for the remaining two T20I matches against South Africa. The 28-year-old Bumrah didn’t play in the series opener against the Temba Bavuma-led side in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday (September 28) and on Thursday (September 29), it was reported by news agency PTI that he has suffered a serious back stress fracture injury which will keep him out of action for at least four to six months.
Confirming the news of Bumrah’s back injury and Siraj as his replacement, the BCCI posted a tweet in which it said, "The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Mohd. Siraj as replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah for the remainder of the T20I series against South Africa. Bumrah has sustained a back injury and is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team."
Bumrah has reportedly been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as well. The right-arm pacer made his comeback to the Indian team after a gap of more than two months against Australia last week in the second T20I, which was played in Nagpur. But after playing the last two T20Is against the reigning T20 World Cup winners, Bumrah again got injured, because of which he will now miss the action on the field for a considerable amount of time.
Siraj, who has featured in 5 T20Is, 10 ODIs and 13 Tests for India in his career so far, last played a T20I match for India against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala on February 27, 2022 and picked up one wicket. In his five-match T20I career for India, he has picked up five wickets at an average of 41.80 and a strike rate of 10.45.
The second T20I of the three-match series will take place at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday (October 2), and the final match is scheduled at Holkar Stadium in Indore on October 4. Both the teams will then face each other in a three-match ODI series, the matches of which are to be played in Lucknow, Ranchi, and Delhi.
