Bhopal: On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons on Saturday, the Election Commission (EC) will honour voters aged 100 and above in Madhya Pradesh.
It is estimated that 4,168 voters are over the age of 100 in the state, including 3,040 women and 1,128 men, said Madhya Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anupam Rajan.
He said 862 of them reside in urban areas, while 3,306 live in rural areas.
"The EC will honour voters who have taken part in voting since the first general election held in the country and have completed or crossed 100 years of age on the occasion of the International Day of Older People," Rajan told news agency PTI.
It is planned that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey will participate in the programme virtually at 11:30 am and interact with the centenarians.
The programme will be held in all district headquarters of the state, he said.
On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons.
Anupam Rajan said that the oldest man in MP is 118-year-old Dhannaji, who lives in Salna Colony in Ujjain district's Tarana Vidhan Sabha seat, and the oldest woman is 111-year-old Kunwri Bai, of Barwani district's Pansemal town.
He added that Sehore has the highest number of centenarians with 325, followed by Ujjain - 296, Dewas - 217, Rewa - 189, and Rajgarh - 173.
Officials will present centenarians with a citation, shawl and shreephal (coconut) at these centres or at their homes if they are unable to attend because of old age, the official said.
Under the chairmanship of Block Level Officers (BLOs), a committee has been constituted in each district. The panel also includes a revenue official, a local teacher, a panchayat secretary, an anganwadi worker, and an employment assistant, he added.
