Kurukshetra man gets 12-year imprisonment for minor girl's rape in Panchkula

Panchkula: A 20-year-old man was sentenced to imprisonment for 12 years by a local court in Panchkula on Friday for raping a 16-year-old girl in 2018. The Panchkula court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the accused, police said on Sunday.
The convict was identified as Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Bhogpur Colony, Kurukshetra, in Haryana.
Additional District and Sessions Judge, Praveen Kumar Lal convicted Sandeep under Section 346 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentenced him to 12 years of prison under Section 4 (punishment for penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences(POSCO) Act along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh, reported The Indian Express.
Police said that the victim’s father had lodged a complaint on June 12, 2018, at the Sector 16 police station regarding the missing of the girl. He alleged in his complaint that his daughter had come to visit him from Rajpura and had then gone missing. The victim’s father named Sandeep Kumar in his complaint.
Based on the complaint, police had launched an investigation and brought the girl was rescued from Kurukshetra a week later on June 17, 2018.
The girl was then sent for medical checkup which confirmed that she was raped.
“A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered after the medical examination of the girl. Kumar was arrested on June 26, 2018. The chargesheet was presented in the court by investigating officer sub-inspector Baldev Singh for prosecution on September 21 and court announced its judgement on August 5, 2022,” said police.
