India's one of the top medal contenders Amit Panghal clinched the gold medal in men's 48-51kg (flyweight) category in boxing to cap off a sensational return after a disappointing in the Olympics last year in Tokyo. Panghal probably was the best boxer in his category and he showed why.
Panghal stormed through quarters and semis to assure India of a medal in boxing and in the final too, he proved to be too strong for his English opponent Kiaran MacDonald as he won the bout by a unanimous 5-0 decision to put the Olympics exit completely behind him.
Speaking to India Today after clinching the gold medal, Panghal said that he rated this medal really highly as he was broken after Olympics while lauding his coach's efforts in his string return.
“After the Olympics, I rate this medal very highly because it was very necessary. After the Olympics, I was broke to the extent that my coach had to lift me up. I want to say to him that his efforts have paid rich dividends. After the Olympics, this medal holds a lot of importance for me,” he said.
Panghal was quick to admit that the medal won't compensate for his performance at Olympics last year where he was knocked out in the pre-quarterfinals after losing to Colombia’s Yuberjen Martinez 1-4 but mentioned that it would make him stronger.
“This medal won’t be able to make up for my performance in the Olympics, but it would make me stronger. The Olympics is the Olympics. I couldn’t get a medal last year and will try to get one in the next edition,” he said.
Panghal said that it's important to be strong mentally and maybe he wasn't that strong at the time of the Olympics but he will do everything to be fit in time for the Paris Olympics.
“From here on, we will start preparing for the Olympics. As we keep playing in competitions, we will keep going up. We have to work really hard as winning a medal in the Olympics won’t be easy,” Panghal further said.
