Chandigarh: Consumer court in Chandigarh directed online ticket booking platform, Make My Trip to pay a remuneration of Rs 39,000 to a customer whose flight was cancelled without a refund, reported The Indian Express.
The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission upheld the decision of a district consumer court and asked Make My Trip to pay Rs 39,000 to the customer.
The complainant customer Rajat Sharma said that he booked flight tickets on Make My Trip, for himself and his family from Chandigarh to Bagdogra and back to Chandigarh in 2019.
The tickets in total had cost Sharma Rs 51,688. However, the return flight from Bagdogra to Chandigarh was cancelled without any prior information or warning and Make My Trip even refused to refund the remaining amount.
The complainant also said that Make My Trip refused to initiate any refund despite repeated complaints and attempts at connecting with them and they were not provided any alternate arrangements for the cancelled flight either.
The complainant had to finally book another flight and due to a last-minute booking, it cost them Rs. 36,469. After failing to refund, Make My Trip shifted the blame on Jet Airways airline for cancelling the flight.
During the hearing at the consumer court, Make My Trip said that while booking the flight, the customer had agreed to the terms and conditions of the online ticket booking platform, which specified that the liability of the cancelled flight lies on the airline and not on the platform.
The court said that the platform was aware of the ongoing insolvency protection against Jet Airways by the National Company Law Tribunal but failed to act swiftly for the compensation to mitigate customer loss.
