Pandharpur Wari processions in Pune: Three gold snatching gangs nabbed, over 50 arrested for pickpocketing
Pimpri Chinchwad police have nabbed three gangs of gold chain snatchers from Latur, Beed, and Ahmednagar districts while more than 50 people were arrested for alleged thefts, robbery, and pickpocketing amid ongoing Pandharpur Wari processions. The procession took a two-day halt in the Pune after arriving in the city on Wednesday.

Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad police have nabbed three gangs of gold chain snatchers from Latur, Beed, and Ahmednagar districts while more than 50 people were arrested for alleged thefts, robbery, and pickpocketing during the two-day halt of the annual pilgrimage of Lord Vitthala devotees to Pandharpur in Pune which ended today.
As many as 19 gold chain snatchings were reported during the Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi (palanquin) processions on Tuesday. The police have recovered gold items worth Rs 5.10 lakh from these gangs.
The police arrested 26 men and 11 women from the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi procession and solved 12 chain snatchings. Similarly, 14 men and two women were taken into custody from the Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi procession and seven cases were solved.
The palanquins of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj started their journey from Dehu and Alandi in the district, respectively, and reached Pune on Wednesday. As people flooded the streets through which the palanquins passed, at least 19 cases of theft and robbery were registered at Dighi, Dehu Road, and Nigdi police stations.
Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner Ankush Shinde said that the police had spread out over 10 squads to curb chain snatching, pickpocketing, and harassment incidents. They took help from police units across districts.
"We have arrested over 50 people including women for alleged theft, robbery, and pickpocketing during the Wari and recovered stolen or robbed gold jewellery and other objects from them," said a police officer.
Police teams in plain clothes were deployed during the Wari's progression, he said. Two people were arrested as they were clicking photos of women on the banks of the Indrayani river at Dehu Road, he added.
Both the palanquins had halted in Pune for two days.
