Amravati: The Amravati Police of Maharashtra have detained four more persons for making threat calls to people who posted social media posts in support of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma. The detainees are being questioned, Nilima Araj, Police Inspector, City Kotwali PS said as per news agency ANI.
Last month, a chemist, Umesh Kolhe, was killed by three Muslim men when he was returning to home. Kolhe was killed for sharing a social media post backing Nupur Sharma. Later, it was found that few more people had received threat calls for sharing the post and were forced to record an apology.
Amravati Police Commissioner Arti Singh said today appealed to people to contact the nearest Police station if someone threatens them directly or indirectly over their post on Nupur Sharma. The details of the complainant will be kept confidential, she said while speaking to the news agency.
The Amravati incident happened days before the Udaipur incident, where a tailor was beheaded by two Muslim men for allegedly forwarding a message in support of Nupur Sharma.
The Amravati Police have arrested the accused including the alleged mastermind. They have been booked under Sections 302 (murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The case has been transfered to the NIA.
Earlier, independent MP Navneet Rana alleged that the city police commissioner was trying to suppress the fact by portraying it as a case of robbery. She, however, denied the charge saying this was a blind case and the police could not have issued any statement unless the evidence was clear.
"It was a blind and sensitive case. In such cases, we can't say anything, and can't issue an official statement before having all the evidence," she said while speaking to ANI.
