Bengaluru: An eyewitness in the Shivamogga stabbing incident has claimed that the attackers had identified Prem Singh, the man who was stabbed, as a Hindu by the 'tilak' he was sporting during the clashes.
While speaking to Times Now, the eyewitness said, "They knew he was a Hindu because he was wearing a 'tilak' on his forehead. They caught him and stabbed him multiple times."
Prem Singh (20) was stabbed after clashes broke out between two communities in Shivamogga over putting up banners of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and 18th century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan yesterday.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar told media that the stab victim hails from Rajasthan and was an employee of a garment shop where the clashes broke out.
Singh was on his way home when he was stabbed by miscreants near the vegetable market of Gandhi Bazar under Doddpet Police Station, Shivamogga Town, police said adding that the miscreants had fled the spot.
The suspect in the stabbing incident was shot in the leg when he allegedly tried to attack the police personnel who went to detain him. He was admitted to a hospital and is currently undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, a case of attempt to murder was registered under section 307 of IPC against him and three others. Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the IPC have been imposed in the town.
