Eight engineering students sentenced to life imprisonment for rape of minor girl in Jhansi

The eight convicted students dragged the girl and her friend inside the hostel when they were on way to tuition classes in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh on October 11, 2020.

Jhansi: In a major verdict, a special POCSO court sentenced eight polytechnic student to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh in 2020. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on each of the accused.
All accused were found guilty of the crime, said special public prosecutor Vijay Kumar Kushwaha. The convicts have been identified as Rohit Soni (Mahoba), Bharat Kumar, Sanjay Kushwaha (Mahoba), Dharmendra Sen, Monu Parya, Mayank Shivhare (Jhansi), Shailendra Kumar Pathak (Gonda) and Vipin Tiwari from Prayagraj.
All the accused were tried under 11 sections including sections5/6, 9/10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Kushwaha said that all of the accused were convicted and given life imprisonment till their last breath for committing the heinous crime, according to a report in Times of India.
12 witnesses including the survivor, her friend and a sub-inspector deposed. It is said the police officer Vikrant Singh who deposed in the case was passing through the area when he heard screams of the girl and rushed to her rescue and saved her.
Rohit Saini's DNA sample also got matched and that served as a prime evidence. The crime reportedly took place on October 11, 2020 when the victim was on her way to tuition with her friend.
The convicted students dragged the girl and her friend inside the hostel on Gwalior Road. The accused, who were all hostellers, raped the girl and beaten up her friend. The hostel was vacant during that time owing to COVID pandemic.
The incident had triggered outrage across the state.
