India started their tour of West Indies with a thrilling 3-run victory in the first ODI of the three-match series on Friday (July 22) at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain. Yuzvendra Chahal played a key role in helping India defend their total of 308 by taking two vital wickets.
Following the end of the game, Chahal was the player chosen to attend India's post-match press conference. While Chahal spoke about his match-winning performance which included a new role for him, a reporter asked him an unique question suggesting that cricketers should wear shorts instead of full pants in order to deal with the extreme heat the sport is played in.
Answering the question, Chahal dismissed the idea and mentioned that while fielding players near to slide in the field and wearing shorts can be damaging to the body. The veteran leg-spinner also mentioned that he already has plenty of bruises on his knees.
"No, No. I don't agree with that (playing in shorts). Because we have to take care of our knees whenever you slide, it's very hard. My two knees are already gone, there are many bruises. I think full pants work well for us," said Chahal in the press conference.
Talking about taking up the role of bowling in the death which is uncommon among spinners and not something Chahal has done in the past for the Men in Blue, the leg-spinner credited his stint with the Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL).
"This change has come from the IPL, because there I was bowling the 16th, 17th and 18th over, so I got the confidence from there. My role was clear, I was told to bowl two-three overs after the 40th over. So I practice accordingly and also plan with our bowling coach," Chahal explained.
