Bengaluru: As India commemorates its 75th anniversary of independence, free bus service will be made available to the general public throughout Bengaluru on August 15, according to the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the BMTC, it has also been decided to provide free trips to city residents.
The BMTC released a statement on Thursday addressing their silver jubilee celebrations. "On August 15, BMTC turns 25 and we are giving Bengalureans a free ride from any location to any location within the city. We encourage people to join our buses and take advantage of the Independence day," the statement reads.
All regular, AC, and customised Volvo buses operated by the BMTC are covered under the free service. Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, is believed to have advised the action.
The BMTC also disclosed that 300 electric buses would be made available to the general public on August 14 at Vidhana Sodha in Bengaluru. These 12-meter-long electric buses will likely travel the city's longer routes. Several locations in the city supposedly have fast-charging facilities for e buses installed.
The BMTC will award medals to the drivers who have avoided collisions throughout their service on August 16. The corporation's drivers will each receive 2.968 silver medals and 168 gold medals in total. The BMTC also provides free heart examinations for its workers over 45 at Bengaluru's Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.
