PV Sindhu on Wednesday (July 27) was bestowed with the honour of being India's flag-bearer in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. The star Indian shuttler will be sharing the top honor with the Indian men's hockey team's captain, Manpreet Singh. Earlier, Neeraj Chopra was bestowed with the honour. But the officials had to make a change after the star javelin thrower was ruled out of the quadrennial event.
A few hours before the opening ceremony, Sindhu was all smiles and took to Twitter to share a glimpse from a badminton court in Birmingham. The 27-year-old has kicked off the preparations for her events with her teammates. Sindhu will be competing in the women's singles division on August 3.
A two-time Olympic medallist, Sindhu had won a silver medal in the CWG 2018 held in Australia. She lost to Saina Nehwal in the final. The face of Indian badminton, Nehwal isn't part of CWG 2022.
COVID scare for Sindhu
Sindhu reportedly suffered a COVID-19 scare upon landing in Birmingham. As per a report in The Times of India, her results showed some deviations. As a result of it, she was isolated. Sindhu tested negative soon and joined her teammates to kick off the preparations for the event.
The report also adds that it was due to the COVID scare that the officials had to delay the announcement regarding the country's flag-bearer.
The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2022 is scheduled to start at 11:30 PM today (July 28). The ceremony will take place at Alexander Stadium. The same venue will host the closing ceremony on August 8.
