The New Moon Day (Amavasya) of the Ashadha month is called Phalguna Amavasya. This day is perfect for commemorating the deceased ancestors and praying for their Moksha (liberation). Hence, people perform Shradh and Tarpan rituals to please their dead relatives.

  • On the night of Amavasya, the Trantrics perform poojas because it is deemed ideal for their practices.
  • However, ordinary people and devotees can make use of the totkes shared below:
  • Apply kajal to the little children at home to guard them against the evil eye.
  • Sow or plant a bel tree.
  • Offer food and water to those children who speak less, have autism or are differently abled.
  • Donate seven types of grains.
  • For a blissful married life, the husband and wife must perform a havan at night and have a meal together.
  • Do not speak anything untrue.
  • Perform puja of Maa Kali.
  • Rotate a few coins or currency notes around a sick person's head anticlockwise and donate them to the poor.
Ashadha Amavasya Vrat Vidhi
- Those who stay close to holy rivers such as the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Godavari, the Narmada, etc., traditionally take a bath in the sacred waters. However, since taking a bath in holy rivers may not be a practical step, add a few drops of Gangajal to the water you would use for bathing.
- One must maintain celibacy.
- Consumption of meat, onion and garlic is strictly prohibited.
- Avoid wheat, rice and pulses.
- Perform Shradh/Tarpan rituals with the help of a priest or under his guidance to seek the blessings of the deceased relatives.
- Seek forgiveness from your dead ancestors for offending them either intentionally or unknowingly.
- Pray to your ancestors and light an oil/ghee lamp in the memory of the departed souls.
- Help the poor and needy by offering them food or other essential items.
- Offer bhog to your ancestors and a portion of it to cow and share the remaining with your family members as Prasad.
