Kanpur: In a major crackdown on offenders responsible for violence during protests against suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her Prophet Mohammed remark, UP Police arrested 415 people and registered 20 FIRs so far.
Notably, Nupur Sharma's alleged comments on Prophet Mohammed made during a TV debate sparked violent outrage in multiple cities across the country and also invites harsh condemnation from the international community.
Protests in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur turned violent on June 3 and other districts of the state as well in the subsequent days over Nupur Sharma's Prophet remark. A total of 40 people, including 20 police personnel, reportedly sustained injuries during the violent incidents in Kanpur.
Earlier this week, the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) served a notice to the stepmother of the prime accused in the June 3 violence, Hayat Hashmi regarding the demolition of a hostel allegedly owned by her.
The notice, issued under section 27(1) of the Town Planning and Development Act by the KDA's chief Engineer, Rohit Khanna on Tuesday asked Shahida Zafar Hashmi to appear before him on June 30 and submit a written explanation about raising the said building without getting the map sanctioned.
The notice further mentioned that if the owner fails to reply, a fine of up to Rs 50,000 for illegal construction will be imposed, which will be increased by Rs 2,500 for each subsequent day.
The KDA had earlier demolished a building owned by Mohammad Ishtiyaq, who is allegedly a close aide of Zafar Hashmi in Kanpur's Swaroop Nagar.
