Coimbatore viral video: The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The video shows the woman boarding the bus and seen demanding a ticket.
Coimbatore: As many state governments offer freebies to its citizens, one woman in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore refused to travel free in state government bus. The senior citizen from Coimbatore, in an expression of self-esteem, asked the bus conductor to issue her a ticket for the journey, saying a firm no to the freebie offered to her.
Succumbing to her insistence, the conductor finally issued a ticket to the woman. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The video shows the woman boarding the bus and seen demanding a ticket.
The conductor argued with the woman telling her that there was no need to buy a ticket as per the government scheme. The angry woman, however, purportedly said, "I do not want to travel OC." OC is an apparent colloquial slang referring to something that comes free of cost, according to a report in PTI.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu led by its Chief Minister MK Stalin has allowed women to travel free in state government-owned buses since 2021.
Free travel for women in state-run buses was a poll promise of the ruling DMK ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections.
Earlier in August, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin weighed in on the 'revdi/freebie' debate over free services offered by the political parties. Talking about free bus travel provided to women by the state government on select routes, Stalin emphasised that it was an 'economic revolution' and that it should not be categorised as 'freebies.' The scheme has helped families save between 8 and 12 of their income, claimed the Tamil Nadu CM.
