Noori Saleem is a 70-year-old transgender woman who is ‘Amma’ to hundreds of orphan children in India, especially those who have been abandoned or orphaned due to HIV. Noori ran away from home at the age of 13 to escape the abuse she encountered at home and lived on the streets & railway platforms with beggars and street people. Noori, a former sex worker was the third person in India to be officially recorded as HIV+ in 1987 and left the business immediately after. She started SIP Memorial Trust in honor of three of her friends who lost their lives to HIV and has adopted and helped several children over the years through this initiative since it began in 2003.
