CWG 2022: Defending champions India settle for silver, lose to Malaysia 1-3 in badminton mixed team event

India settled for a silver medal in the mixed team badminton event at the Commonwealth Games 2022. India lost to Malaysia 1-3. The men's doubles pairing of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty went down to to the Olympic bronze medallists duo of Teng Fong Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh. Kidambi Srikanth also lost his match to 42-ranked Tze Yong Ng.

Birmingham: India settled for a silver medal in the mixed team badminton event at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Tuesday as they lost to Malaysia 1-3. India's Kidambi Srikanth lost to Tze Yong Ng in three games.
The men's doubles pairing of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also went down to the Olympic bronze medallists duo of Teng Fong Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh. India's ace shuttler PV Sindhu won her match against Goh Jin Wei. In the women's double, Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly were defeated by Thinaah Muralitharan and Koong Le Pearly Tan.
Notably, Malaysia lost to India in 2014 in Gold Coast. In the opening contest, Reddy and Shetty lost the majority of rallies s they failed to keep pace with the Malaysian pair. The Malaysians won this match 21-18, 21-15.
In the women's singles, Sindhu was expected to win the match quite comfortably, but the Malaysian shuttler gave a tough fight. The two-time Olympic medalist defeated Goh by 22-20 and 21-17. In the men's singles match, Srikanth came up with an underwhelming performance. After losing the first set, Srikanth managed to level the game by winning the second set. However, he maintain the momentum and lost the third set. The world number 14 lost to 42-ranked Tze Yong Ng 21-19, 6-21, 21-16.
In the women's double, the number 11 duo of Thinaah Muralitharan and Koong Le Pearly Tan proved too good for the India duo. Gopichand and Jolly went down in straight sets 18-21 and 17-21.
In the Commonwealth Games 2022 medal tally, India is at the sixth position behind South Africa. So far, India has won five gold medals, five silver and three bronze medals. Australia is leading the medal tally with 41 gold medals, followed by England with 30 gold medals.
