The Thailand women’s cricket team secured a historic win on Thursday (October 6) when they got the better of the Pakistan team by four wickets in the Women’s Asia Cup T20 match at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet, Bangladesh. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Women in Green posted a total of 116 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. But in a surprise for everyone in the cricket fraternity, Thailand's team achieved the total in 19.5 overs for the loss of six wickets.
It was the team’s first win in this year's seven-team continental event staged in Bangladesh, while for Pakistan it was their first defeat in three matches.
For the Thai team, opening batter Natthakan Chantham top-scored by making 61 runs from 51 balls. During her stay at the crease, she hammered two sixes and five boundaries. She kept her side in the contest from the start till the fourth ball of the penultimate over of the run chase. She got out on the fourth ball of the 19th over, and at the time of her dismissal, Thailand was still short of 12 runs with only eight balls left.
But Rosenan Kanoh (9 not out from 5 balls) and Nattaya Boochatham (3 from 3) kept their nerves calm to help their side cross the finish line and secure a historic win.
After Boochatham scored the winning run on the penultimate ball of the final over, Thailand's dugout erupted in joy, and the players celebrated the moment with loud cheers and ran on to the ground to hug the two batters who scored the winning runs.
The official Twitter handle of the Asian Cricket Council shared a video of the celebrations on the social media platform.
Sharing her delight over the team's win, Thailand captain Naruemol Chaiwai said, "Pakistan are a strong side. We want to win against every team. At this moment, we want to enjoy and the win will come automatically. No specific plan, the same plan everyday. In the last two games, we did not bowl the correct line or length, but today we did it."
Earlier, for Pakistan, opening batter Sidra Ameen scored 56 runs, but she played 64 balls for it while other batters failed to contribute significantly.
