Mumbai: The politically sensitive pothole issue appears to be a concern for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is eager to avert public wrath ahead of the critical civic elections, the date of which has not yet been set.
According to a senior official, the BMC has already turned more than 50% of the 2,055 km of asphalt roads in Mumbai into cement concrete (CC) roads.
According to BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner P Velarasu, the civic organisation has turned 1,030 km of roads into CC roads and aims to finish the network in the next five years. "Going by the current pace, we have targeted to convert all the remaining roads into CC roads in the next five years," Velarasu told PTI.
Roads that are filled with potholes cause a lot of inconvenience for residents, particularly motorists. Due to potholes and car damage, drivers say that they become physically and mentally weary during the trip. As a result, he said, they made the decision to replace asphalt with concrete to expedite the construction of CC roads.
Asphalt roads are good for dry conditions, he continued, but they don't last very long in areas with frequent downpours and water seepage. Additionally, building CC roads to alleviate the pothole issue is a global trend.
Since April 1 of this year, the local council has received over 10,340 complaints about potholes on city roadways, totaling 17,000 square metres.
According to officials, there are fewer new potholes on Mumbai's roadways this year than there were at the same time period last year.
In addition to offering a facility to file complaints through websites, social media, and a toll-free helpline, the civic body has created an app for reporting potholes.
