Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday announced that the government has decided to reduce the number of members of the Punjab Public Service Commission from 10 to five as part of the government's "austerity measures".
At present, there are 10 members and their salaries, perks, and other emoluments are causing an undue burden on the state exchequer, according to the Chief Minister. Due to these issues, it was decided to reduce the number of these members by half.
Bhagwant Mann explained that the reduction is to make the Commission's operations more cost-effective.
"The salaries, perks and other emoluments of these 10 members are putting an undue burden on the state exchequer," said Mann in an official statement.
"The reduction is being done to make the functioning of the Commission cost-effective," he added.
According to Mann, this will streamline the Commission's work and save taxpayers' money at the same time. It is expected that the state government will save a lot of money with this decision, said Mann.
"With this decision, the state government is expected to save a lot of money being spent on these members," he said.
The Punjab CM further said that once the number of existing members reaches five after the term of a few members is completed, the official notification will be issued.
Money saved through these efforts will be put to good use for people's welfare, said Mann, adding that more such decisions will be made in the coming days.
