Chennai: Promoting the use of clean energy in the Southern Metropolis, the Tamil Nadu Energy Agency (TEDA) is planning to set up new solar-powered charging stations for E-vehicles in Chennai. These stations which will be model plants are to be set up at two prime locations in the city- the Secretariat and the DPI campus in Nungambakkam.
The idea behind the move is to encourage private players to choose solar power while setting up charging stations in public spaces. The identified locations were chosen because along with private vehicles, many government vehicles frequent these areas.
The charging stations are expected to be up and running by the end of this year. It would be set up at a cost of Rs 1 crore which will be funded by Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiatives (TANII) after the necessary orders are passed.
These proposed solar-powered charging stations have a 100kW capacity and can charge about 15 vehicles at the same time. These stations would be built like a typical car shed with solar panels on the roof.
“The panels would be connected to the grid, so that the vehicles can be charged anytime. The stations would have different types of charging guns such as CCS 2 and CHAdeMO to make them usable for all types of e-vehicles. E-bikes and scooters too can be charged at these stations and both slow and fast chargers would be available for vehicles,” said a TEDA official, as reported by the Times of India.
Presently, charging points for e-vehicles in the city are at eight Metro stations including Nandanam, Anna Nagar East, and Koyambedu. TEDA has already set up the first solar-powered charging point with 25kW capacity in front of the EVK Sampath building in the DPI campus, where its office is located.
The proposed charging station would be set up at a different spot in the same campus. In the Secretariat too, the spot to set up the station has been identified, a TEDA official informed.
