Kyiv: At least three people were killed in a Russian strike in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Wednesday, reported AFP. Meanwhile, 10 people were also reportedly injured in the attack. The development was confirmed by Igor Terekhov, the mayor of the city, through his Telegram account.
The attack started a fire in a block of flats in the northeastern city, said Terekhov. In the initial days of the invasion, Kharkiv was besieged by Russian troops. However, they failed to take control of the city. Notably, hundreds of people were reportedly killed in the region after the Russian invasion.
The attack on Kharkiv was carried out a day before United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Ukraine. Both the leaders will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Lviv.
In the past few week weeks, Russia has stepped on attacks on Kharkiv. On Monday, at least one person was killed while four others were wounded in the Russian shelling of the city's Saltivka residential neighbourhood.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. The war has now centred in the southern and eastern parts of Ukraine. Russian troops are trying to consolidate their position in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. The region comprises separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. Last month, Russia claimed to have taken full control of Lugansk. The fighting has now intensified in Donetsk.
Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine are also accusing each other of shelling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. The plant has been under the control of Russian troops since March this year. However, it is still being operated by Ukrainian staff.
