Acclaimed author Salman Rushdie, on Friday, was hospitalised with serious injuries after he was repeatedly stabbed on stage at a public appearance in New York state. The 75-year-old author was set to deliver a lecture on artistic freedom at Chautauqua Institution in western New York.
However, reports state that a 24-year-old man, rushed on to the stage and stabbed the Indian-born writer, who has lived with a bounty on his head since his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses that hurt religious sentiments.
Recent reports claim that the acclaimed author is off ventilator and his condition is improving. His agent Andrew Wylie told Reuters that the author is on his road to recovery and that his condition is headed in the right direction.

Interestingly, this is somewhat contrary to what Rushdie's son Zafar tweeted today. He wrote, "Following the attack om Friday, my father remains in critical condition in hospital receiving extensive ongoing medical treatment."
However, he did add that the family is extremely relieved that he was taken off the ventilator and additional oxygen and he was able to say a few words.
In the family statement shared by Zafar, it states that though the injuries are severe, the author's feisty and defiant sense of humour remains intact.
"We ask for continued patience and privacy as the family come together at his bedside to support and help him through this time," the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, the suspect, Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault at a court appearance on Saturday.
