Kolkata: The Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra is back in Kolkata after a two-year hiatus brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. The organizers of the city's three largest rath yatras, Iskcon in Kolkata and Mayapur, and Mahesh in Serampore, anticipate a large turnout this year.
Rath yatras in Kolkata draw record crowds. As people celebrate the day with much grandeur and zeal, decorated chariots of Lord Jagannath, Goddess Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra are brought out throughout the yatra.
Several lakh worshippers are anticipated this year, according to information from the global Iskcon headquarters in Mayapur. Devotees travel from Assam, Jharkhand, and Bihar to attend the Rath Yara in Kolkata, which runs from Gurusaday Road to the Brigade Parade Ground.
A spokesperson for Iskcon Mayapur, Subroto Biswas, stated that devotees from all over the world are expected this year as the celebrations were subdued in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid.
According to media sources, the administration claims to have taken preparations and is making sufficient safety arrangements for the populace in order to prevent a stampede-like incident, which cost at least three lives in Panihati during the Danda Mahotsav this year.
Rath yatras are also held in Mahishadal, Amadpur, and Guptipara (Hooghly) in West Bengal.
