KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Aakash Chopra reacted to the IPL media rights auction
  • The rights have been sold for a value of more than 100 cr per match
  • The league will have two separate broadcasters
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights E-auction currently going to determine who will land the rights to telecast and broadcast the league all across India, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra reacted to the numbers coming out after bidding for package A and package B.
Package A- which consists of the TV rights for the Indian subcontinent region was sold for Rs. 23, 575 crores while the digital rights for the same region went for Rs. 20,500 crores. While the names of the winners are yet to be named, both have been won by two different broadcasters for a total value of Rs. 44,075 crores for a total of 410 games.
This means that every IPL match is now worth Rs. 107.5 crore which sees it rise to almost double from the previous figures of Rs. 55 crore when the rights were sold in 2018. This also makes the Indian domestic cricket extravaganza the second most popular sports league in the world behind USA-based National Football League (NFL).
Reacting to the reported numbers, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra called it a proof of the 'endless potential of the country.' "IPL becomes the second most lucrative sporting property in the world. Wow
That’s when India is a ‘developing country’ and is apparently, not a ‘sporting nation’ either. The potential of our nation is limitless. Extremely proud. Jai Hind," wrote the former Indian opener on Twitter.
With the bidding for package C (18 non-exclusive matches) and package D (Rest of the world digital and streaming rights) still going on, the process will be completed tomorrow. After winners of all four categories are determined, an official announcement is expected from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on the winner and the valuation.
Star India had won the rights in previous E-auction for the 2018-22 cycle for a valuation of Rs. 16,347 crore.
