Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez had a moment of madness on the pitch as he headbutted Crystal Palace defender Joachim Anderson. The incident saw Nunez receive a straight-red, and would now see him facing a ban for the next three games.
Nunez, purchased for a club-record £85m transfer from Benfica, reacted to him being pushed by Anderson during the Premier League encounter between Liverpool and Palace on Monday. Anderson had pushed Nunez, who in return, headbutted the Palace defender. Anderson immediately went down on the ground, prompting the referee to issue the Liverpool star a straight red card.
Here's the video on the incident:
Despite being 1-man down, Liverpool scored the equaliser thanks to Luiz Diaz who produced a brilliant individual effort to pull his team level. Earlier, Wilfried Zaha had opened the scoring for Crystal Palace following a brilliant solo run.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also reacted to the incident involving Nunez and Anderson. Though Klopp feels that Nunez was provoked, he still doesn't believe the Uruguayan should've reacted the way he did.
“There was provocation but it was definitely the wrong reaction,” the Liverpool manager said. “He will learn from that. Unfortunately, he has now three games to do that. It is not cool for us but it is how it is.
“Of course I will speak with him. I came in [after the game] and wanted to see the situation [on television]. In the game I could not see anything so I could know what happened. I saw Andersen on the floor and Darwin walking away. That was my picture. Then I saw it – yes it is a red card. Wrong reaction in the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but he (Núñez) made a mistake. Of course I will talk about it with Darwin but not yet.”
Nunez will now have to sit out the highly-anticipated match against Liverpool's arch-rivals Manchester United. With 2 draws in the first two games, the Reds haven't gotten off to the most desired start. United, on the other hand, have two losses in their first two games which puts them bottom of the league standings.
