Assam: IIT-Guwahati student from Kerala found dead in hostel room

Assam News: Police have started an investigation after registering an unnatural death case. The exact reason behind the extreme step of the student has not been ascertained yet.

Guwahati: The body of a student of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) was found from his hostel room on Friday night, officials said on Saturday.
Police have identified the deceased as Surya Narayan Premkishore, a native of Kerala and a final year undergraduate student of Design Department of the IIT-G.
The IIT-G is situated in Amingaon area across the Brahmaputra River from Guwahati.
“The student was found hanging in his hostel room. The body has been recovered from his room and sent for post-mortem,” said Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, Hitesh Ch. Ray.
Police have started an investigation after registering an unnatural death case. The exact reason behind the extreme step of the student has not been ascertained yet. Besides, police have also not recovered any suicide note.
A statement released from the IIT-G administrative office read, “It is with great sadness that IIT Guwahati announces the untimely passing away of a final year undergraduate student of Design Department on the campus. The institute has informed the parents of the student and they are on their way to Guwahati.”
There have been multiple cases of students dying by suicide over a decade at IIT-G.
On December 2, 2019, the Ministry of Human Resource Development had informed the Parliament that the IIT-G reported 14 student deaths, including suicides, in the last five years. It was the highest number of deaths among the 23 IITs for the given period, the ministry added as reported by The Hindu.
