Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the country's Commonwealth Games 2022 contingent and returned from Birmingham with a total of 61 medals. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and MoS Sports Nisith Pramanik were also present at the occasion.
Earlier, PM Modi had announced that he will be meeting the medal winners from the 2022 Birmingham Games at his official residence at 11 am on Saturday. Later, a felicitation ceremony has also been organised by the Ministry of Sports for the athletes at New Delhi's Ashoka Hotel.
Addressing the athletes at his residence, PM Modi urged the Commonwealth Games to meet the budding athletes at Meet the Champions initiative and inspire them to win medals for the country.
"This is just the beginning for our #YuvaShakti… the Golden age of Indian sports has just begun! Under Khelo India, I urge all athletes to meet the youth under Meet the Champions initiative, to inspire and encourage them. The Indian Prime Minister also spoke about the need to create a sports ecosystem to find new talent.
"We have to intensify our efforts to find new talent and take them to the podium. We have to create a sports ecosystem that is inclusive, diverse and dynamic. No athlete should be left behind," he said.
Further in his address, PM Modi highlighted how the athletes inspire the entire country with their performances.
"Be it Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, the way our daughters have dominated in sports is nothing short of amazing. You don't just win a medal for the country, you also strengthen the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. You inspire the youth of the country to do better not only in sports, but also in other sectors," he stressed.
"Tiranga is the power & inspiration for all athletes. Your determination to keep the tricolour flying high has led Team India's stellar performance at the Commonwealth Games," the PM added.
Of the 61 medals that India won, 22 were gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze. Nearly 200 Indian athletes competed for medals across 16 different sports at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Wrestling topped the medal charts for India, with the grapplers winning a total of 12 medals, of which six were gold. India enjoyed plenty of success in weightlifting too, with the sport accounting for 10 medals.
