KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jasprit Bumrah has been reportedly ruled out of 2022 T20 World Cup
  • The right-arm pacer is dealing with back issues
  • Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar are in contention to replace him
Team India has reportedly suffered a big blow before the start of the 2022 T20 World Cup as Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the ICC event due to a back stress fracture. The injury has seen him miss many matches this year and the senior pacer will once again sit out.
As per PTI, Bumrah is likely to stay out of action for the next 4 to 5 months. Apart from T20 World Cup, he will also miss the New Zealand tour and the action earlier next year. No other pacer can fill Bumrah's shoes and the latest update will surely have an impact on India's chances at the ICC event.
Keeping the injury-related issues in mind, the BCCI had announced 4 standby players for T20 World Cup and the board also planned to send them to Australia. Team India now needs a replacement for Bumrah before leaving the country.
Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami, Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi are India's 4 standby players for T20 World Cup. One of Chahar and Shami will be an automatic pick in the squad. Given his experience, Shami holds an edge over Chahar. But he hasn't played a T20I since last year's World Cup.
Shami was slated to make his T20I comeback in the series against Australia but was ruled out due to a COVID-19 positive test. It kept him out of action in the series opener against South Africa as well. Shami has now recovered from the infection and might be in action in the 2nd T20I, to be played on October 2.
Chahar, who was on the standby list in the 2021 T20 World Cup as well, has his chances but doesn't have much experience compared to Shami. The BCCI can also pick any player out of the standby list but only Shami and Chahar seem to be in contention.
An official word on Bumrah and his replacement is likely to come out soon.
