Salman Khan was charged with hunting down chinkaras in September 1998 in Bawad in Mathania, close to Jodhpur. Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu, and Neelam were also observed hunting two blackbucks while they were filming Sooraj Barjatya's film, "Hum Saath Saath Hain."
Khan was charged with killing a second Chinkara within the same month when the movie was being made at the Ghoda farms.
Khan was found guilty by a trial court of violating the Wildlife Protection Act. The Bollywood actor received a Rs 25,000 fine and a five-year jail term.
The actor's 2007 sentence was suspended by the Rajasthan High Court. Following his appeal, the high court also withdrew the Arms Act accusations.
He was finally sentenced to five years of jail term but is currently out on bail. All the other accused in the case except him were acquitted.
With this step, the locals want to spread awareness regarding wildlife and the environment.
The statue of Chinkara is massive, made of iron and cement and weighs about 800 kg. Sculptor Shankar, an artist from Jodhpur, prepared it in just 15 days.
The horns on the idol were made of real deer instead of cement or iron. The statues have been installed by bringing horns from the remains of a dead deer in the forest.
