Chennai Corporation makes wearing of masks mandatory from tomorrow (July 6), imposes Rs 500 fine on violation

The Greater Chennai Corporation has made the wearing of masks mandatory in Chennai starting tomorrow, July 6. The order issued by the corporation is in view of rising Covid-19 cases in the city. Violation of the mask mandate will lead to a Rs 500 fine.

Chennai: In the wake of a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation has made the wearing of masks mandatory in Chennai. The order will be effective from tomorrow, July 6, and violators of the mandate will invite a fine of Rs 500.
In a press statement issued by the Chennai Corporation, it said that following the increase in the number of positive cases across the city, the need to follow safety protocols has been announced.
For the third consecutive day on Sunday, Tamil Nadu reported over 2,000 new coronavirus nfections.
Out of the 2,672 cases logged from the state on Sunday, almost two-thirds were from Chennai with 1,072 cases and its three neighbouring districts of Chengalpattu with 373, Thiruvallur with 131, and Kancheepuram with 81 cases. Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu’s Test Positivity Rate (TPR) was higher compared to Chennai district (11.3 per cent) and the state’s average.
