Fliers will soon be able to fly paperless at some of the busiest airports in the country with the help of the DigiYatra app. The beta version of the app was launched by the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) and Bengaluru’s Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on the 76th Independence Day.
The app is available for download on Google Playstore for Android devices and an iOS version will be launched soon. It will allow the passengers to access swifter check-in at the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3.
DIAL in a statement on Monday said that passengers departing from Delhi airport’s Terminal 3 may download the app and register themselves for a seamless travel experience. The app will allow the passenger to pass through various checkpoints at the airport through paperless and contactless processing, using facial recognition features to establish the passenger’s identity. The app would use facial recognition technology to automate passenger’s entry at all security checkpoints, including entry into the airport, security check areas and aircraft boarding.
The app would also link travel documents with the identity of the traveller. So passengers would not need to carry physical copies of boarding pass, ID proof and vaccine certificate. Passengers using the app would spend 3 seconds less at every touchpoint.
BIAL said the biometric system has been made operational at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport’s e-gates and is being implemented for all domestic airlines in a phased manner.
BIAL further said that “privacy issues are taken care of and passengers will not have to worry about sharing their data as it is secure and will be deleted after 24 hours following their travel. ”
“The app will also ensure enhanced security at the airport as the passenger data is validated with the airlines' departure control system, thereby only designated passengers can enter the terminal. The entire process is nonintrusive and automatic leading to optimisation of staff for stakeholders like CISF, airlines and others,” the statement from DIAL added.
“The Delhi airport is among the first few airports of the country which are ready with the facial recognition system. The system is going to give a seamless experience to passengers. It will save passengers from the process of identity checks at multiple points and encourage them to travel paperless and also enhance safety at the airport,” said DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar in a statement.
