Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal played its first match of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 on Thursday (November 24). The European giants faced Ghana in their Group H match at the Stadium 974. Portugal secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Ghana, which lived up to its reputation as the dark horse.
For the Portuguese team, Ronaldo, who was playing in his fifth straight World Cup, opened the scoring in the 65th minute when he converted from the spot. With his opener for Portugal, Ronaldo created history by becoming the first player in FIFA World Cup history to score in five World Cups. It was his eighth goal in the 18th FIFA World Cup match.
But his celebration was short-lived as Ghana’s Andre Ayew scored an equaliser in the 73rd minute of the game. And just when it started to look like the game was heading for another draw, Portugal scored two back-to-back goals. Joao Felix and Rafael Leao scored in the 78th and 80th minutes off an assist from Bruno Fernandes to put Portugal 3-1 ahead with 10 minutes plus injury time to go.
Cristiano Ronaldo left the pitch in the 88th minute, but within a minute of his exit, Ghana scored its second goal of the night, bringing Portugal fans to the edge of their seats.
The goal was scored by Osman Bukari, who came in as a substitute for Mohammed Kudus in the 77th minute of the game. But more than Bukari’s goal, the thing that caught everyone’s attention was his celebration after finding the back of the net.
He celebrated his goal by copying Cristiano’s iconic celebration, and the 37-year-old's reaction upon seeing this on the field went viral on the internet.
With a win over Ghana, Portugal reached the number one position in Group H. They have three points, and if they manage to secure a win over Uruguay on Tuesday (November 29), then the European team will confirm its place in the knockout stage.
