The first reviews of Top Gun: Maverick are already in and critics are all-praises for the Tom Cruise starrer. One person wrote, "It's true, it's true! Top Gun: Maverick is the most fun I've had at the pictures in a long, long, long, long (long) time. Go see it, then see it again, then go home and dream about it, bake it a cake and declare yourselves wed. A proper, full-fat, note-perfect blockbuster," while a second person wrote, "TOP GUN: MAVERICK is a movie about how Tom Cruise will never stop doing this shit, absolutely not, you can’t make him. (Yeah, it rules.)"
"We have entered the portion of the TOP GUN: MAVERICK rollout wherein enough people whose opinions I actually respect have seen it and enjoyed it, and I am therefore allowing myself a little hype, as a treat," shared a third, while a fourth wrote, "Tom Cruise putting his Top Gun: Maverick co-stars through flight school to fly real jets and for them to be their own cinematographers in their cockpits? That’s cinema, baby."

Meanwhile, director Joseph Kosinski, in a recent interaction with Insider, revealed why Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan are not showing up in the film sequel of Top Gun: Maverick, unlike Tom Cruise who is reprising his role as the protagonist.
According to Kosinski, having the added spice of new characters was an important element in the film. In fact, back in 2019, McGills had theorised the reason she was not asked to reprise her role was because she was old, fat and looked age-appropriate for what her age is.
